The Former Indian Legend Sunil Gavaskar is again facing backlash on account of his controversial statement on the present coach of the Indian team, Gautam Gambhir.
While talking about India’s recent test victory against Bangladesh in Kanpur, Gavaskar uttered that Gambhir does not deserve any of the credit for that victory, as he believes that it was the skipper Rohit who led his team to the victory with his attacking approach in that match. In that match, more than two days already got washed out, forcing a draw. But the attacking intent of the Indian team, firstly with ball, then with their bat on Day 4, in which they also made records of fastest to reach a total of 50 and 100. Rest of the job was done by the bowling unit as they ceased the last innings of Bangladesh at just 146 runs, getting a minimal target of 96 runs, which was easily chased by the Indian team having 7 wickets in hand.
After the win, a lot of Indian fans acknowledged Gautam Gambhir for guiding the team to follow an attacking approach to go for a win rather than a draw. The fans started to classify the approach as “Gamball.” However, this opinion was protested by the 1983 World Cup winner Sunila Gavaskar, as he believes that only Rohit should be credited for the win as he has been following this approach even before the commencement of Gautam’s stint as the head coach. according to Gavaskar, crediting Gambhir that early cannot be justified.
But this statement of Gavaskar was not appreciated by the Indian fans, and he faced a lot of trolls from the fans of his own country. Fans are accusing him of being biased and saying that he only supports the player of the Mumbai lobby as he is also a Mumbaikar. His social media account has been filled with hate comments, such as he should not continue commentary. Some fans are commenting that he does not have a right to talk about all this as he himself used to play at a bad strike rate.
This is not the first time that he has been in controversies due to his statements. Earlier, he also made a controversial statement on Virat Kohli’s family that Virat’s game gets distracted when Virat’s wife comes to see the match, which saw him a lot of hate by Virat’s fans. Even Virat’s wife Anushka showed disappointment regarding this statement, but later Gavaskar apologized publicly for the words.
