The rivalry between India and Pakistan in cricket remains unmatched in intensity, history, and emotions. As the two teams gear up for their highly anticipated clash in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, cricketing legends Navjot Singh Sidhu, Yuvraj Singh, Shahid Afridi, and Inzamam-ul-Haq shared their insights on JioHotstar’s special episode of Greatest Rivalry Returns.
Navjot Singh Sidhu: ‘India vs Pakistan is the Mother of All Battles’
Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu emphasized the psychological nature of the contest, stating, “It is the mother of all battles. There’s nothing bigger than this. The tension unites millions of fans, and the pressure on players is immense. It’s more than just skill—it’s a mental game. The team that converts nervous energy into positive performance will emerge victorious.”
Yuvraj Singh Recalls His First India-Pakistan Clash
Yuvraj Singh reflected on his maiden experience of the fierce rivalry during the 2003 ICC World Cup. “It was one of the greatest ODI games I’ve played. Shahid Afridi welcomed me with some ‘kind words,’ and that’s when I truly understood what this rivalry meant. Watching it on TV was different from actually playing in it. The pressure was immense, but excelling in that match boosted my confidence tremendously.”
Shahid Afridi: ‘India-Pakistan Matches Define Careers’
Pakistan’s former captain Shahid Afridi reminisced about the rivalry and how players prepared for it. “Our seniors taught us how to fight and win matches. We were told, ‘Show the opposition your eyes and put pressure on them.’ But Yuvraj, being the son of a Sardar, doesn’t take pressure—he focused on his game and played with confidence.”
Afridi further emphasized the significance of these encounters: “For a cricketer, an India-Pakistan match is a golden opportunity. I used to lose sleep before the game, thinking about my performance. Even if I didn’t perform in five or six matches, one good game against India could make everything right. That’s how important it is.”
Yuvraj Singh on the Importance of Momentum
Yuvraj stressed the impact of an India-Pakistan match on a tournament: “Regardless of the format, this game always feels like a final. A win sets the tone for the tournament, building momentum and confidence. I remember the 2017 Champions Trophy—India won the opening game, but Pakistan won the final. Nothing is guaranteed, so starting strong is crucial.”
Inzamam-ul-Haq on the Evolution of the Rivalry
Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq highlighted how modern cricket has shifted towards individual brilliance. “Earlier, team balance played a crucial role in deciding matches. Now, with T20’s impact, individual performances can turn games around. India has been strong in recent years, with all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya providing balance. In subcontinental conditions, these players make a huge difference.”
India vs Pakistan – The Showdown
With both teams prepared for a high-stakes battle, fans across the globe are eagerly waiting for the historic clash. The much-awaited match is set to take place on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 2:30 PM IST and will be broadcast live on JioStar Network and JioHotstar.
