The IML will commence with a blockbuster showdown between two legendary teams—Sachin Tendulkar’s India Masters and Kumar Sangakkara’s Sri Lanka Masters—on February 22. The tournament opener will rekindle memories of the iconic 2011 ICC World Cup final, where India emerged victorious in front of a packed Mumbai stadium. With some of the greatest cricketing legends returning to the field, fans can expect a thrilling contest fueled by nostalgia and fierce competition.
Former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter Romesh Kaluwitharana expressed excitement about the tournament and the opening clash, saying, “Playing in India has always been special. We share a deep bond with Indian players, and it will be great to compete against them again. We have prepared well, and I believe Sangakkara will be our key player.”
Innovative Playing Conditions in IML
The IML Governing Council, in collaboration with Simon Taufel, the head of the umpires’ panel, has introduced several unique playing conditions:
- Free Hit Rule Innovation: If a batter is bowled or caught off a Free Hit, no runs will be awarded.
- Impact Player, Mid-Over Stop Clock, and Player Reviews for Wides/No-Balls: These will not be in operation during the league.
- Decision Review System (DRS): DRS will be available for team reviews.
Cricketing icon Gundappa Vishwanath has been appointed as the Match Referee, while the umpiring panel includes Simon Taufel (head), Billy Bowden, Lyndon Hannibal, and Umesh Dubey.
Simon Taufel expressed enthusiasm for the league, stating, “The IML will showcase some of the greatest cricketers, supported by an elite umpiring panel. Cricket evolves constantly, and the Free Hit innovation in IML will add an interesting strategic dimension to the matches.”

Cricket enthusiasts can catch the IML live from February 22nd onwards on JioHotstar and television broadcasts on Colors Cineplex (SD & HD) and Colors Cineplex Superhits at 7:30 PM IST.
