Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have named Rajat Patidar as the captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The 31-year-old explosive batter has been an integral part of the franchise since joining in 2022.
Patidar first joined RCB in 2021 but made an impactful return as a replacement player in 2022. He had a breakout season, scoring 333 runs at a strike rate of 152.75 in 12 appearances. This included a match-winning 112* off 54 balls against Lucknow Super Giants in a crucial Eliminator. In 27 matches for RCB, Patidar has registered seven half-centuries and a remarkable century.
Head Coach Andy Flower’s Praise for Patidar’s Leadership Qualities
Andy Flower, Head Coach of RCB, praised Patidar’s leadership qualities, stating: “Rajat has a calmness and simplicity that will be beneficial as a captain, particularly in the IPL. We closely watched him when he captained his state side and liked what we saw. He cares about his teammates, which is an essential quality for earning respect as a leader. The bravery with which he plays will also be key for him, especially during the inevitable ups and downs of the IPL.”
The Captaincy Selection Process
Mo Bobat, Director of Cricket at RCB, highlighted the thought process behind selecting Patidar as captain. “We spent a lot of time discussing this decision. There were discussions within the management, with Rajat himself, and with Virat, who brought in a lot of experience. We found that Rajat was a great option, especially since the squad is fresh and ready for a new chapter with a new captain,” Bobat said.
Patidar, reflecting on his leadership, said, “I’m not the most expressive captain, but I’m aware of the match situations. I believe in backing my players and providing a relaxed and confident environment for them. I’m excited to learn from Virat Kohli, one of the best in cricket, whose experience will help me grow into this role.”
