Bangladeshi veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has announced his retirement from the T20 internationals ahead of the second test match against India. Shakib was the third cricketer in the world to score 5000 runs and take 300 wickets in T20 cricket. Shakib Al Hasan has appeared in all the T20 World Cups since 2007. Shakib also has the record of highest wickets taken in the T20 World Cup. He has clinched 47 wickets in 36 matches. Earlier, Shakib also announced his test cricket retirement as he declared that his last test match will be against South Africa in Mirpur. His last ODI assignment will also be the champions trophy of 2025, which will mark the end of his international career from all the formats. The reason regarding his retirement has not been announced yet.
Shakib has played 129 T20 matches since the year 2006 and has scored 255 runs at an average of 23.2 and a strike rate of 121.2. His bowling stats in this format are also appreciable. In the same number of T20 matches, he has succeeded in taking 149 wickets at a cheap economy of 6.81.
He also suffered a finger injury in the first test match against India while facing a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. Due to that injury, could only bowl 21 overs in the whole match.
Shakib has also been part of a lot of controversies since years. There is also an FIR registered against him for connection in the murder that happened during the protests in Bangladesh. However, BCB confirmed that this FIR will not affect the decision of his inclusion for the Bangladesh team.
Shakib also faced a two year ban from the year 2019 to 2021 because he did not report to ICC about getting approached by some corruption agencies.
But there is no doubt in accepting the fact that Shakib is one of the greatest players Bangladesh has ever witnessed.
