Cricket has seen numerous legends, but very few match the stature and influence of Sachin Tendulkar. In an exclusive interview, former West Indies cricketer Dwayne Smith shared his admiration for the ‘Little Master,’ highlighting his humility, knowledge-sharing, and dedication to the sport.
“When I was at Mumbai, I always tried to stick around him because, as an opening partner, I wanted to understand the person I was playing alongside. I would ask him questions, and he was always very accommodating,” Smith recalled. “He’s been very good with everyone around him. You can see why he was so great by the way he prepared for his cricket.”
Experience in the International Masters League
The International Masters League (IML) has brought together cricketing legends from around the world, allowing fans to relive their favorite moments from the past. Smith spoke about his experience in the tournament and the joy of playing alongside old friends and competitors.
“It’s been very good so far. We started the tournament with two wins, and the guys are upbeat. Our skipper is joining us back again for the next game, so it should be some exciting cricket going forward,” he said enthusiastically.
On Playing with the ‘Prince’ of Cricket
Smith also reflected on playing alongside Brian Lara, one of the most gifted batsmen in the history of the game.
“It’s special. I remember watching him break the record for the first time when I was young, and then being part of the team when he scored 400 runs—it happened on my birthday! That was a dream come true. I’ve had some great partnerships with him, and it’s always a pleasure to bat with him. When he’s at the crease, everything seems easier.”
Future Plans After the International Masters League
When asked about his plans beyond the IML, Smith expressed his desire to continue playing in different leagues across the world.
“I hope to play in more leagues. The IML is expanding, and I would love to be part of tournaments in South Africa, Australia, and England. Hopefully, we can get one in the West Indies as well. If someone comes on board to support it, I’m sure it will be a great thing for the region.”
Facing India Masters and Sachin Tendulkar Once Again
A highly anticipated clash in the tournament will see Smith’s team face the India Masters, featuring the ‘God of Cricket’ himself, Sachin Tendulkar. Smith recalled his early IPL days playing alongside Tendulkar and the lessons he learned from the legend.
“Playing with him was easy. I remember in my first IPL season, he advised me to keep hitting the ball straight and not play across the line. But then, I saw him doing the opposite! He walked over to me, smirked, and said, ‘Do as I say, not as I do.’ That stuck with me. Opening the batting with him at Mumbai was a dream come true. Walking behind him onto the field was always special because the crowd would go crazy for him. I wasn’t sure if they were cheering for me, but it was a great experience to be by his side.”

As the tournament progresses, Smith hopes to entertain his fans and relive his best performances on the field.
“Just come out and support! I’m going to go out there and do my best to entertain everyone.”
