The BCCI is set to take a call on Harmanpreet Kaur’s future as the designation for the captain of Indian women’s team. The Indian team had an early exit in the recent T20 World Cup in the UAE. This was the first time under Harmanpreet Kaur’s captaincy that the team could not even be able to make their way to the knockouts of the T20 World Cup.
According to certain reports, the BCCI will organize a meeting regarding this aspect with the selection committee and the head coach,Anmol Mazumdar, before the start of the India woman versus New Zealand woman series commencing on October 24. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has been leading the team since 2016 and has led the team to at least knockout of T20 World Cup, except for the recent one. The Indian team got defeated in their first match against New Zealand and therefore got knocked out of the tournament by Australia on Sunday. Despite defeating Pakistan in the tournament, the whole team had a flop show. This early elimination from the league has forced the BCCI to reevaluate the situation and requirements in the Indian team as the Indian team is yet to register their maiden T20 World Cup trophy.
According to a source of the BCCI, they are looking for a new face to lead the Indian team. However, there is no doubt in the future of Harmanpreet Kaur as a player, as she is still a crucial part of the Indian team. Apart from that decision of Harmanpreet’s captaincy, nunber of contracts of the coaching staff are also likely to be renewed.
The BCCI wants to take the call as soon as possible so that that team and skipper would prepare better for the next ODI World Cup, which will be held in India.
Indian star batter Smriti Mandhana is the major contender for the captaincy spot as she has been one of the prominent member of the Indian team since number of years.
