India A batter, Tilak Varma showcased his class with the bat as he
struck a fine century against India D on Day 3 at Anantapur on
Saturday afternoon. The 21-year-old was able to get going with the bat
after his uneventful or flop show during the first innings. After
being dismissed for 10 runs in the previous innings, he managed to
bring up his fifth first-class century in the Duleep Trophy 2024
match. His innings comprised just nine boundaries which lasted for 193
deliveries to extend India A’s lead in the match up to 488 runs and
then finally, Mayank Agarwal decided to recall the batters and declare
their innings.
The young batting star shows range of shots including the sweep,
reverse-sweep and some fine footwork during his innings which resulted
in the century and by those runs putting his side well in front in the
match. The main strength of Tilak Varma`s batting is that he plays
bowl very close to his eyes and with the long stride forward which
helps him to build momentum to smash fours and sixes. He is
technically very sound batsman with one loop hole, that he lacks
patience which is very essential to build long innings. He has V shape
grip while handling the bat which helps him to smash crispy drives in
off side. Tilak Varma will be eyeing more big knocks as he has done
today to hopefully secure a spot in the long-term plans of the Indian
cricket team.
Till now he has represented the national side in four ODIs and 16
T20Is but is yet to make an appearance in the longest format. The main
problem that arose in Tilak Varma batting , was that he was not able
to convert his starts like 30 or 40 runs to big scores whenever he had
represented the Indian cricket team. This is the reason why he has not
been able to sustain his spot in Indian cricket for a consistent
period of time. Tilak Varma needs to consistently score runs and
hundreds in domestic cricket just like he had made hundred today to
bang the door for the selection of the Indian cricket team once again.
