Even after the introduction of the uncapped player rule for the IPL 2025, there is still an uncertainty that MS Dhoni will continue to play in this league. According to the uncapped role, any player who has not played international cricket for five or more years will be classified as an uncapped player.
A few days ago, BCCI was accused of being biased in favour of CSK for introducing the rule, especially to allow CSK to retain MS Dhoni at a lower price as he has not played international cricket since 2019, which would make him count as an uncapped player, if the CSK wants to retain him as an uncapped one.
But the CEO of the CSK, Kasi Vishwanath, put an end to all those accusations. Kasi said that the franchise is not even sure that they would use the uncapped rule for MS Dhoni. They said that there is no confirmation that MS Dhoni will continue to play one more year.
However, Kasi said that the team is hoping that he will play for another year, but they haven’t had talks with MS regarding this. He added that MS Dhoni is currently in the US, and Kasi will meet him within a week and discuss his future with the team. Dhoni has already retired as the captain of CSK before the commencement of IPL 2024 and passed on the baton to youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad.
According to the new retention policy, each franchise can retain a maximum of six players with the help of RTMs and retention. This is not the first time the uncapped player rule is introduced in the league . This role has been in the IPL since 2008 but was scrapped in 2021. Not just CSK, many other teams can also benefit from this uncapped player rule. Players like Sunil Narine, Mohit Sharma, and Piyush Chawla can also be retained by their respective franchises without spending much.
