Former Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has given up on Prithivi Shaw and is tired of giving more chances to him.
Prithvi Shaw was once hailed as the next Sachin Tendulkar, but his continuous ill behavior towards the game where he got injured, got banned for use of an illegal substance and his constant discipline issue, didn’t allow him to reach his potential. The 24-year-old U-19 World Cup winning captain hasn’t been able to perform well in any form of cricket be it IPL or domestic cricket.
Recently the former DC head coach Ricky Ponting has revealed that during his stint with the franchise he got sick of giving Prithivi Shaw more chances to perform. Ponting said he doesn’t like to talk about individual players, but Prithvi Shaw shouldn’t be an outliner, he should be someone that’s in every team. Ponting also said that Shaw had a chance to represent his country as a youngster, making a 100 on his test debut.
They couldn’t find a place for Shaw in the DC team and for him as coach it is disappointing to not be able to make a certain player better and get the best out of them, Ponting added.
Ponting also said that when you feel like you are not making players better and they are not doing what you think is right for the team, then you should look for other players that can do it for you . Ponting also said that he had a lot of chat with Shaw to try to make him a better player.
Prithvi Shaw Career & Controversy
After winning the U-19 WC in 2018, Shaw was destined to be the next big thing, he made his debut for the Indian team in a test against West Indies where he scored a century but later picked up an injury in Australia ahead of Border-Gavaskar trophy in 2018. Shaw made his ODI debut in 2020 and T20I debut in 202, he last played for the Indian team in 2021. Despite receiving many chances Shaw is unable to justify his talent after making a promising debut for the Indian team at the age of just 18, his form and his off-field activity has restricted him as a player.
In IPL he has been a part of DC for 7 years but in all those seven seasons he played for Delhi his highest season score came in 2021 where he scored 479 runs. In his IPL career he has played 79 matches and scored 1892 runs with an average of 23.95. Due to his constant poor form he found himself out of the playing 11 of DC in 2024 IPL.
Prithvi Shaw has been around controversy all his life after his debut, where the youngster was suspended for 8 months by the BCCI for doping, in 2019, the cricketer clarified that the banned substance entered his body because of a cough syrup.
In 2022 Prithvi Shaw failed the YO-YO test before the IPL. In May 2021 he broke the regulation of covid and was seen vacationing in Goa. In the recent times he was seen wrestling with a young women fan who was wielding a baseball bat to assault him as he tried to save himself.
Ricky Ponting has dropped his hopes with Shaw but has said that Shaw is still young and very talented and hopefully one day the penny really drops for him and he works out what he needs to do to be the best cricketer that he can be.
