The IPL auction for the forthcoming season will be a mega auction. The auction is likely to be held at the end of November. The teams have been given a time frame till November 15 to announce their retentions whereas the retention rules are not announced yet . The retention policy which was earlier expected to be announced by the end of August got delayed by more than 20 days and is now expected to be announced this Thursday.
There are several reports stating that in this mega option, there will be a maximum five retentions allowed to each team. Out of the five retentions, every team can select either three Indians with two overseas or four Indians with one overseas player.
Meanwhile, different franchises have different perspectives on this policy. Franchises like Punjab Kings and Lucknow Supergiants demanded that there should only be four retentions allowed to each team which would increase the player pool in the mega auction allowing all franchisees to get new players in their squad. On the other hand, franchises like CSK, KKR, and Mi are demanding more than five retentions so that they can retain their core squad. There are also reports that there will be no RTM available in this mega auction. Earlier There was also speculation that RTM will make a comeback in this league after 2018.
In the previous mega auction of IPL 2022, only four retentions were allowed to each team. Out of the four retention, every team could retain either three players with one overseas or two Indians with two overseas. Whereas, in the 2018 mega auction, the RTM was also available. In the 2018 mega option, three retention were allowed along with two players which could be retained through RTM, whereas for the team that retained less than three players, three RTMs were allowed to them.
In the mega auction of IPL 2014, when RTM was not introduced, five retentions were allowed out of which maximum four retention could be Indians.
