Veteran Indian spinner Amit Mishra has recently made a statement claiming he wouldn’t have chosen Shubman Gill as the captain of the Indian team in the T20I series against Zimbabwe. Based on Gill’s poor performance in the IPL 2024, Amit Mishra said that Gill is clueless about captaincy and doesn’t know anything about how to captain a side.
In the high scoring season of IPL Gill only managed to score 426 runs with a strike rate of 147.40, it was Gill’s first season leading a team in IPL where it was clear that he was not comfortable captaining Gujrat Titans, and the pressure of captaincy didn’t allow him to score big. Gill, who doesn’t have any prior experience as a captain, had a bad season with Gujarat Titans where they stand on 8th position on the points table. In the T20 series against Zimbabwe, Gill was only in the team as a player he did not perform well with the bat and captaincy was also not that impressive.
Ruturaj is more worthy: Mishra
While adding to this Mishra also said that he likes Gill as a player, but he thinks that Ruturaj is a better option as an opener, while comparing Shubman with Ruturaj, Mishra added that he thinks Ruturaj is a better player than Gill because he has performed as required by the team and situation.
Ruturaj has a good experience as a captain where he has captained the gold medal winning Indian team in Asian games, he is the current captain of Chennai Super Kings in IPL apart from this Ruturaj also captains Maharashtra cricket team in domestic cricket.
Mishra also said that India should have kept Ruturaj as a reserve player instead of Gill in the T20 world cup because he is a complete player and plays perfect cricketing shots instead of playing risky shots.
Mishra added that he thinks Ruturaj can perform well in all three formats. Mishra made a big statement saying that he thinks Ruturaj should hire a better PR man
Other options for captaincy?
Amit Mishra said that there are other options for captaincy as well, players like Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson can also be the potential captains of the Indian team in long formats whenever Rohit decides to steps down.
