The second test match of the India vs. New Zealand test series will be played at the MCA Stadium, Pune. The test match will only be the third test match to be played at the venue. The first test match was played here on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy of 2016-17, where Australia defeated the Indian team by 333 runs. The pitch of the ground for the second test match of the series is expected to be a slow, turning black soil pitch. The Indian team was also expecting the pitch of Bengaluru to be turning, but the rainy conditions before the first test match and on the opening day changed the condition of the pitch, favouring pacers, which gave an edge to the New Zealand pacers.

A black soil pitch is usually a dry pitch that tears out easily and favours spinners. In accordance with the black soil pitch of the Pune, the Indian team added young all-rounder Washington Sundar as a 16th member of the test called before the second test.
